this is what fall looks like : hiking to desolation lake {part one}

10.04.2011

{may i suggest listening to these violins while you look? it's really sort of magical...}

i can't get over how soon autumn has come...this is what i ached for
all those years we lived away from the mountains. and here it is, just out my door.
i was giddy about wearing flannel and wool hiking again {though the wool eventually came off}.
around each corner my lips grinned and i turned to ceej and proclaimed my
undying affection for this autumn season: the colors, the smells, the cool air,
the way an aspen tree sheds its leaves with a gust of wind...oh my heart!
this was a morning hike worthy of true awe.

this morning ceej and i had plans to go running up the canyon,
but as soon as i tied my laces i heard the rain start...
so we went to our yoga mats instead and opened up the windows to hear the rain.
it's raining...and i can hardly contain myself.
the first snow of the year is on its way to my mountains this week.
have you ever experienced the first dusting of snow in the mountains?
that lovely white layer of snow over the yellow and orange aspens
is something that every eye should behold in this life.
i'm quite sure that the best of magic happens in autumn.

have you been to the mountains yet? it's incredible.

I sure miss the mountains of Utah, I don't know why we always go in the summer. This is the time of year to be there.

I have been a quiet reader of your blog for a few years now. I so appreciate your beautiful words and photos, but I am a bit shy of introducing myself over the internet. I had to thank you for this post though. I moved to Hawaii about a year ago and fall is when I most miss my mainland home. Thank you for carrying me away to your golden mountains.

My gosh, how I wish I could be in the mountains! We don't have any mountains here in the Netherlands (which could just as easily be called the Flatlands). I do dream of living in a place like this, with so much natural beauty just around the corner. At least autumn has started here as well, the air is crisp and fresh and I love it.
