our little ladies

10.02.2009

these lovelies have been gracing our kitchen table since tuesday.
we've been waiting for them to ripen.
they're so pretty that i'm hesitant to eat them,
now that they're ready.

i haven't always loved pears.
in fact, my admiration began only last fall
when i tried a french butter pear
at a local orchard.
heaven.
so smooth.
not too sweet.
just enough flavor.

also love the symbolism of pears:
they are sacred to three goddesses
hera, aphrodite, and pomona,
and they are the chinese symbol of
immortality.
what a fruit, yes?

ours are finally ready...

this little lady was soooo ready
that she started to undress herself,
revealing her yellow ripeness
and parting her red dress.
yes, we have a risque pear on our hands.

tomorrow we're off to apple and pear paradise:
apple hill.

have a fruitful weekend!

photos by me. september 2009.

Do you think a pear was the fruit Adam and Even partook of in the Garden?
