taking refuge at the cabin in the mountains : reading pages, running through autumn leaves, sleeping in, and comfort food...mostly breakfast

10.30.2012

a couple weekends ceej and i escaped the city to the cabin in the uinta mountains.
i treasure its silence most. it's a silence that allows me to watch the thousands of ideas
that cross through my mind, and finds some way to put it all in perspective.
it's a silence that helps me toss out the unnecessary that somehow started to seem so very necessary
while giving me the ambition to do all the scary stuff that dreams are built on.

so we try to head up to the silence of the cabin as often as possible.
this last trip we ventured out to a nearby small town to look at historic homes built of sandstone...
hoping to buy our own one day (if we can ever be daring enough to put down roots).
we found a perfect home on lots of land with a chicken coop to boot. only problem: the price tag.
but we continued to sneak around the yard and peek inside its windows. some day.

dinner was in another nearby small town with scandinavian roots...where we ate at a fabulous mexican restaurant...complete with a salsa bar (26 different kinds!). it was a golden sunset night,
and i wanted to drive on forever and ever...

we slept in. we never sleep in these days. sleeping in is 6:00 am for me around here...so 8:00 am
was absolutely dreamy. the next question was 'should we go running?'
of course.
but we made it short and sweet. thirty minutes just to breathe some mountain air and get the pulse going.

after a good run ceej made me french toast. a lovely weekend tradition i hope never dies.
the store didn't have any creme freche so we tried something new atop our breakfast: lemon curd.
if you get just the right amount (a thin layer) it's wonderfully tart.

more relaxing followed...

then the arrival of friends for soup, bread, cheese, and fruit.
it was an out-on-the-porch kind of day and so we ate together there.
in the surrounding silence and talked.

hoping to go back this weekend.

Sounds like a great place to go to. It's so important to be able to go to a place where you can clear your head and get your priorities straight again. And french toast! I must remember to make it this weekend. Thank you.

I like the way you wrote the things that happened. I would love to go there and probably spend a portion of my life in that silent place. It sounds very relaxing. This is such a sweet post :)

So beautiful. Dreaming about your dream house is fun. And french toast is my all time favourite breakfast food, especially with raspberries and maple syrup; I will have to try the lemon curd!

What a wonderful place to rejuvenate and breathe. I hope to one day have a beautiful place like this to retreat to. And goodness gracious I miss Mexican food! It's all I want to eat when I'm in the US. haha

I'm so enraptured by every post you do, Ann. They make me feel like I'm home, which is a great cure for my ever-growing homesickness. :)

Inge said my thoughts exactly the way I couldn't formulate them:
It's so important to be able to go to a place where you can clear your head and get your priorities straight again.

Your post reminded me that silence is likely what my tired heart is craving lately... not things... just room to think and let go...
