what is necessary when visiting new york city?

5.25.2010

my sister is going to new york city next week.
i've tried to tell her all that i love about the city
so she can try it out for herself.
any suggestions from all of you would be very helpful indeed.
what should sister not miss when she visits?

my very first visit to the city was with a dear friend
when we were just 21...seven years ago.
best spring break ever!!!
i was very giddy for this trip...the night before we left on our little adventure
was the night that i first kissed ceej.
my head was certainly in the clouds!!!
back in those days, we didn't have any cell phones
so there wasn't any convenient way to call him
to hear his voice or tell him how happy i was.
i just kept looking at his then website to get a glimpse of his face.

we went to museums. shopped. and ate yummy, yummy things.
..................................................................................................................
fast forward four years...ceej and i are married...and we went back to the city together.
shopping no longer makes the list as i think eating, walking, and museum-going are much more fun.

i really do love the cloisters.
love how they are away from everything else.
it's so pretty and quiet there.
a lovely respite from the noise.

i'm working on getting more of our photos from this trip more available.
there is some conversion to digital that needs doing.
all of these photos have made for a reminiscent morning...
love the city, love ceej.

so, what should sister do while there?
please tell!

Where do I start? The MOMA Design store in SoHo, or SoHo and general. Go to Balthazar and across the street it the MOMA store.

Then, get a reservation for MOmofuku (also in SoHO) and then head on over to Milk Bar and get the cereal soft serve yogurt and a cookie.

Then, try to see a show. Off Broadway is so fun. Make sure you go to Uniqlo for some shopping, only because that store is fabulous.

I've never been to New York, but now I kind of want to go lol! That scenery with the fountain is so beautiful! If it were me, I would research the best place to get a hot dog or pizza haha :3

the frick is my favorite museum by far, so small and relaxing. the botanical gardens are divine this time of year. momofuku bakery or noodle house. moto is a restaurant that i LOVE in brooklyn, all depression era decour and great comfort food. il labertorio de gelato is the best place to cool of and then wander in the lower east side. churches are great places to sit and rest your weary feet- and evensong at the cathedral of st john the divine is DIVINE. so much to do! so fun!

my city!

the cloisters is awesome, especially in the spring, but it's awfully far up there, depending on where your sis is staying.

let's see. walk along the esplanade from the famine memorial in battery park city to the south seaport (skip the seaport and go straight to "bowne & co. stationers" on water street. trust me.). take the staten island ferry.

go to brooklyn, take a walk or bike ride through prospect park. grab dinner at al di la. take the train to coney island and hang out at the beach.

visit the tenement museum. see a movie at the ifc center. walk through the shakespeare garden and the ramble in central park. kayak the hudson.

consult this:

liberally.

bon voyage!

First of all, can I just say that your blog is so quiet, thoughtful and lovely. I just stumbled across it today and am so glad I did.

Secondly...La Mela, my favorite dumpy little wonderful family style Italian restaurant in Little Italy.

I've only been once, and at the same age as you were! So I don't have any advice, but I did want to comment on how cute you were and how fun those pictures are! And the story behind the picture, with Ceej makes them all the better!

if she loves photography, she should not miss the henri cartier-bresson exhibit at moma. it made me smile and cry at the same time. fabulous, but she should get there early because it gets really crowded.

she should also visit chelsea market and the new high line park (they are together), which even makes native new yorkers giddy.

two subway tips : never get onto the last car of the subway and if she drops something onto the tracks leave it there. get a station person to help retrieve it. hope she has fun!

one more thing ... if she is a crafter, the new purl store in soho is fantastic!

A petite tip for your sister, go to see the ABC interior store in New York. Absolutely dreamy:)
