see how the garden grows!!

5.18.2010

our first little baby zucchini popped up just a few days ago...it was a miracle...happened overnight!
now, only days later, this little one has a friend...we have two baby zucchini!!!

the basil is looking healthy and growing profusely. everything is going so well!
(except for the aphids on the chives...they really like it...and luckily they haven't found anything else yet...any suggestions? we heard spraying things with chamomille tea helps).

this lucious lettuce will be ready very soon! can't wait to have a fresh salad.

i absolutely love reading a book out in my "garden." this place is so full of life and wonder.
(too bad...i just realized that i will be gone to school when the tomatoes and just about everything else are ready to be harvested. boo.)

For aphids: I have had them on bushes, but this is what I was told: To introduce lady bugs into your garden, or dust them with simple kitchen flour, or spray them with a diluted spray of dishwashing detergent and water. I did the latter and it helped.
Good luck. (I have stopped "nuking" all the pests in my yard and try to welcome the birds, butterflies, to EAT them. What do quail eat? I have lots of them, too.

love your garden - my dahlias are getting eaten up by slugs so i understand the dilemma.

Well, this may sound really gross, but my sure fire recipe for ridding of aphids is to put on your gardening gloves and squish them on the plant. Leave the whole mess there. The ones that survive do not like the smell/vibe or whatever of the squished and I've never had them return to the same plant. Horrible but pesticides are not part of my gardening world.

You have got a nice garden out there. I think a connection with plants means a connection with the nature itself.
