Missing Utah Mountains & Salt Lake Valley

7.16.2008

Whose woods these are I think I know...
The woods are lovely, dark and deep.
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.
-Robert Frost, Stopping By Woods On a Snowy Evening.

Most people think that being homesick is a sign of weakness. Maybe they are right to some degree. But for this post I disagree. There is something to feeling a sense of "place". There is something about being connected to a spot of land, the people who live there, and the pace of life. I feel that sometimes people without a sense of place or home develop an attitude of carelessness...a true lack of care. It doesn't matter to them how they earn their money or the time wasted watching TV until they can finally fall asleep...just to face another day in their cubicles. Do you hear what I'm saying?

Salt Lake City is home for me. Have you ever been there? The mountains watch over the valley...it feels safe. When I live there I know in ten minutes time I can be out of the city experiencing the natural world. The people there move slowly. Family is important. Being outside is important. Ice cream is important.

I am learning to find joy in a new city...I feel very much, in this sense, that I have promises to keep, but miles to go before I sleep. Yes, I am interpreting Frost's words to fit my situation at the moment. Maybe it's wrong to put my meaning to his words, but when you are speaking personally how can you be wrong?

To be fair, I will post the things I have come to love about Sacramento tomorrow.

I sometimes feel the further away I move the more Salt Lake feels like home. As soon as I fly in and see those mountains I know I am where I belong. Maybe it is due in part because my parents are still there and the neighbors I grew up with. I also love going to Cinegrill (a place that my grandma loved to eat) and have the same salad she used to love and remember when I could go there with her. We have lived in many regions of the country and internationally but the American West is home.

I think that's what poetry is for. To take whatever meaning from it you like.

You've just summed up what I've been wondering for so long. Why I have stayed in Utah for the past 13 years.
I feel safe and bonded to these mountains.

You have just reminded me why I love Utah. I have been missing Hawaii but today I took a walk up in the canyon. Then I came home and read your post and I'm very happy, content and relaxed. I can shaka here too!
