zion national park : where this nerve-shattered soul went to rejuvinate

2.09.2012

ceej flew home from italy, and the next day we were in the car
driving south to get to our red rock desert.
all of my anxieties about school and the day-to-day routines had
too tight a grip on this soul--so i had to go "home" to the wilderness.
thank goodness ceej was more than willing to come along.

there's nothing like visiting a national park in its off-season:
you can enjoy the vast wilderness without all the crowds
and really take in something that is quite unfathomable...

it's quiet like this that i need. it's views like this i crave.
this wilderness is a necessary remedy. and so i defend it with all my humanity.
can't wait to go back to the desert...just a couple more weeks.

As always, such gorgeous photos! It sounds like a dream. I've noticed that one thing I really miss about America (among other things) is its vast wilderness. I suppose I will have to go to Scotland more often.

I'm glad you got some time away from your studies. That can be so stressful and there is nothing like rose layered mountains to calm the mind and spirit.

P.S. That is one of my favorite John Muir quotes! I got a book of his meditations a few years back and I read at least a page of it a day to remind me what is important in this life. He always brings me back. :)

My parents always talked of Zion as this fire-burnished wilderness, to which they always wished they could take us one day. I have still never been, so it is wonderful to see these photos and to hear you speak of the place so lovingly.

Oh, being even this close to Zion right now from my computer screen in Rhode Island makes me feel better. I've got some Bon Iver playing in my speakers and I'm just trying to close my eyes and transport myself to the desert, standing on a trail overlooking the great canyon, filling my lungs with the fresh, crisp February air. Thanks for these pics and these posts. We live so far from it, and I believe a big part of my heart is still in the land of canyons and mountains. I really miss the solitude and complete awareness of being with oneself in the hills. I need to get back...

Lovely my dear girl. I too find solace in the sacred places of wilderness. Can't wait to get back myself!

Spectacular.

I'm going to have to pack my kids up and go...one of these days...

I'm really needing the restoration of being in the wilderness right now, and it just feels so far away.

I am so familiar with your feelings. I am in desperate need of a looong hike, alone, in the mountains, getting wasted on mountain air. One reason why I love your blog is that it seems like you get from nature what I get from nature... I connect with that.

You are so lucky to live so close to such wilderness! Luckily, the small woods I get to walk in do the trick too (on a day to day basis at least, the longing for more wild and expansive nature remains). It's great to notice the healing effect of walking and nature, every time. It never gets old :)
