I'm beginning to realize that winter time in gardens does not mean that they are "dead", just resting with some beautiful aspects to them, kind of comparable to your awakening to the beauty of the desert. I like the desert more and more; especially since I have my more recent roots here. I'm thinking of all my forefathers who had something calling them from within to move to the desert decades ago.
