These Days

I spend my days with these things.
1) Zuda Yoga Center. Just three blocks away (three seems to be the magic number around here!). It's a Power Yoga studio. Never thought I'd do Power Yoga...it seemed too forced and ambitious. But I'm liking it. Getting used to sweating from every pore in each class. A towel is always necessary, and I'm amazed at how drenched my clothes are at the end of class (sorry to disgust you).
2) The Girl With No Shadow by Joanne Harris. The sequal to her other book Chocolat. Which explains my extra obsession with chocolate lately. It's a great book. I'm approaching the climax and it's starting to get tense...you know it when you start thinking, "No! Just tell him!", "Watch out!" "Ahhhh!". Oh Vianne! You are the woman we all dream of being...maybe that's what I should do. Go to Culinary School to learn to make real chocolates.

Ginger Elizabeth Chocolates...just three quick blocks away from my new home! Hip, hip, hooray! I have already made this place a ritual: every Wednesday at 4:00 PM. I buy a piece of dark chocolate Meyer Lemon and a piece of dark chocolate Palet D'Or AND a bar of delicious dark chocolate to nibble on throughout the rest of the week.

I took Ceej here with me last weekend for our dessert treat. We ordered some of their hot chocolate. I went for milk hot chocolate and Ceej ordered the Oaxacan hot chocolate (that was our favorite!).

So happy I found this place here.

Been dreaming of this Pashley Delibike for a couple years now. People (you know who you are) try to tell me they're too hard to navigate with that big basket on front. I'm sure I could get used to it. It would be perfect for Farmer's Market day. I guess I'd need to get the Pashley Provence in adition just for general-getting-around-the-city days.

Penske: On the Highway


Here we were early on in our 11-hour drive to the Land of Opportunity. In the top photo you can see our sweet 1970-something Schwinn bicycles we snatched from my mom's garage. The photo below shows our Penske passing the Utah Tree.

Don't worry. For all of you who plan on driving out to see us, the drive should take only 9 hours. That Penske was always askin' for gas, and had a hard time over some of the mountain passes.

We're Here!

We arrived just over a week ago during an incredible heat wave. Because of that we put off unloading the van immediately, and instead woke up early the next morning when it was cool to unload. Thanks to all the help we had we finished that laborious chore within two hours!

I've been unpacking and organizing for a week now. I think it's just about done. Hopefully.

Last Saturday we were invited to a BBQ at a home in Napa Valley. It really is a beautiful and lovely place. You should have seen the backyard these people have! I'm looking forward to more gatherings there.

I have some great photos of the move and other Sacramento findings. Look for them soon. My postings might still be a little inconsistent as we don't yet have the internet ourselves.

Well, it's here. We're moving this weekend. Big Sigh. Mixed emotions. Mostly excitement for now. Everything is in boxes. Almost. Ceej flies in tonight. Pack up the van Friday. Drive to sunny California Saturday. No posts for a while. Love you all! Be back in a week, hopefully.

The Date

Ceej was in town for the weekend...yipee! We went on a long-awaited date Saturday night. It began with a walk through the Avenues, included a picnic at City Creek Park, a walk downtown, desserts at Lamb's Grill, and ended how it began: a walk through the Avenues. Loved it. Ceej is now back in Sacramento. But this time our separation is only a few days rather than a few weeks. We both love, love, love Salt Lake and this was a good little farewell for us.

There are a lot of mothers in my family and lots of my friends are now mothers.

I am, of course, most grateful for my own mother. She is beautiful and she is wise and she is kind. Those who have met Mama Peck know she is irresistible. I am constantly amazed that she raised 7 kids! I get tired just thinking about it. She has loved all of us so much, and loves all the grand kids now as well. I love that my mom is an organist, a gardener, a piano teacher, and a grandmother. My mom is the least consumeristic, selfless person I know. She owns very little, but what she does own it is all beautiful and meaningful. She really does know how to live a beautifully simple life.

My sisters, too, are moms...all of them. I guess that makes me a mom too! We'll ALL have kids someday. For now, we share our sister's and our brother's kids. The photo above is of my sisters with my beautiful mom (I'm the baby in the back).

At Least It's Not This Bad

Man, oh man! I have finally commenced my packing. Should have started sooner. We have SO MUCH STUFF! I find myself having a little anxiety over the fact that we're moving into a SMALLER apartment. At first I thought the idea of a smaller place was a good idea and that it would force us to throw some stuff out. Ha!

This photo made me think that I've got it good though. I think. I have yet to open the can of worms that has been stored in my mom's basement...eek!

This book is sooooo good. All of you MUST read it ASAP. It will change your whole outlook on food, and life, really. For any of you who are confused by which diet is right, and what foods you're supposed to be eating, this book is your answer.

Pollan explores how we've come to rely on science, "nutritionism", to tell us what to eat rather than culture...and this is what is essentially killing us. This is why we have the strange phenomena in the West of having many people who are over-fed, but under-nourished. I laughed out loud as I read about how we consume so many food-like substances that are processed rather than eating real whole foods. Ha! READ THIS BOOK!

I love his food algorithms. They are as follows:

01. Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.
02. Don't eat anything your great-grandmother wouldn't recognize as a food.
03. Don't eat anything incapable of rotting (i.e. Twinkies)
04. Avoid food products containing ingredients that are a) unfamiliar b) unpronounceable c) more than 5 in number or that include d) high fructose corn syrup. He gives the example of Sara Lee "bread"...your grandmother might recognize bread as a food, but will not recognize any of the highly processed ingredients. Her idea is of bread is: flour, yeast, salt, water. Period.
05. Avoid food products that make health claims. (Read the book and this will make so much sense)
06. Shop the peripheries of the supermarket and stay out of the middle.
07. Get out of the supermarket whenever possible. Shake the hand that feeds you. Meet the farmer who grows your food-go to the farmer's market!!!
08. Eat mostly plants, especially leaves. (concerning meat: we do not need it other than the B12 it provides...but we would be wise to eat it sparingly, and only as a flavor principle, rather than a a main course).
09. You are what you eat eats too. (The soil the plants are grown in and what the animals are eating is very important too).
10. If you have the space, buy a freezer. (you can stock up on fresh produce in the summer and store it).
11. Eat well-grown food from healthy soils.
12. Eat wild foods when you can.
13. Be the kind of person who takes supplements. (it's not necessarily the pills, but people who tend to take supplements also tend to be more healthy in general...they're just more health conscious).
14. Regard nontraditional food with skepticism.
15. Don't look for the magic bullet in the traditional diet.
16. Have a glass of wine with dinner ( I say have some home made grape juice. I am very anti-alcohol for many many reasons. So I disagree with Pollan here).
17. Pay more, eat less. It's about quality, not quantity.
18. Eat meals. (duh!)
19. Do all your eating at a table.
20. Don't get your fuel from the same place your car does.
21. Try not to eat alone.
22. Consult your gut.
23. Eat slowly. (a shout out to the SLOW FOOD movement...don't let the name confuse you. If you want to find out more about Slow Food read Slow Food by Carlo Petrini. This movement originated in Italy. All of us would agree that the food in Italy is absolutely divine!)
24. Cook, and if you can, plant a garden.


So there you have it. These are my new rules. I like that it doesn't say things like "don't eat cheese, avoid carbs, eat antioxidants" etc. I predict that these rules will stand the test of time.

Sage's Cafe. Vegan. Organic. My favorite. It's located at 300 South and about 500 East. I love the Soba salad, Portabello Tacos, the Guac 'N' Roll, and the Chocolate Raspberry cake. Mmmm. I went there for lunch today with my mom. She loved it too. I will miss this place like crazy.

Friday night I went to hear friends Phil & Biff play at Nobrow Coffee House on Broadway. It was oh so good. As always. It was nice to sit with friends, and listen to our talented friends. I will miss these little gigs.

Nothing Better Than A Spring Storm

Today we've had a wonderful, beautiful, and dramatic sky as this storm came in. There is almost nothing that compares to the sun setting in the west, the clouds brewing to the east and to the south, with the spring-green blossoms against the sky. My new favorite color combo: stormy-sky-gray and spring green. Oh, that Mother Nature knows how to fill us full of awe!
